It is now 27 years since the death of Mona Douglas on 8th October 1987. However, her light continues to burn as brightly as ever. Mona Douglas was a Manx cultural activist, folklorist, poet, novelist and journalist. She was involved in many initiatives to revive interest and activity in Manx culture.This included societies, classes, publications and youth groups. In the 1930's she set up Aeglagh Vannin (the Youth of Mann) and adopted the motto: Piatchyn jiu, ashoon mairagh ("Children today, a nation tomorrow"). She composed a song for them:

Dear First Minister,

On behalf of the Manx Nationalist Party, Mec Vannin, I write to wish you all the best for the future following your decision today to announce you were standing down from the role of First Minister.

You can be justly proud of the progress your country has made during your period at the helm of the SNP government.

Firstly we need to congratulate the Yes campaign in Scotland for the magnificent fight that they put up. They undoubtedly conducted the best campaign and had the strongest arguments. This battle is lost but the war is not. The fact that over 45% of the Scottish voters defied an absolute anti-independence media onslaught and threats from Westminster says a lot. 

All of the talk from Westminster (UK) at the moment is about how hopeless Scotland and the Scottish are and how it would not survive without its English masters. The attitude and vindictiveness towards Scotland is clearly seen by British Prime Minister David Cameron's covert meetings in London to try and influence business leaders to say they would leave Scotland if there was a Yes vote. Well Dave, with self proclaimed friends of Scotland like you around who needs enemies!

Poor Scotland has just had to endure the patronising presence of the English leaders of the three largest parties in the UK parliament. David Cameron (Conservative) Ed Miliband (Labour) and Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrat). Even within England these three men are viewed with scorn and derision. In a panic response after opinion polls showed increasing support for an independent Scotland, these representatives of the British establishment managed to find Scotland on the map and travel north. 'Too little too late' is the response of most Scottish voters to their visit.

A depressed London based media is desperately trying to salvage something after the remarkable performance by Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond in the televised debate with pro-union Alistair Darling. Opinion polls show a huge 71% to 29% majority believe that Alex Salmond scored a victory over Alistair Darling in the debate. It’s certainly not difficult to see why. Darling was reduced to a stuttering, finger pointing wreck as he failed repeatedly to answer questions or make any positive case whatsoever for keeping Scotland within the United Kingdom.
