Mousehole - Porthynys

Mousehole (Porthynys) is a Mount Bay fishing village with a very pretty harbour about two and a half miles south of Penzance. The small St Clements Isle lies offshore from the harbour entrance. Mousehole, Penzance, Newlyn and Paul were destroyed in the 1595 raid by Spaniards on Mounts Bay. It is currently known for holding a number of festivals.

Our visit

The village port of Mousehole lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is has a very attractive harbour area and beach. The port is the setting for the legend of Tom Bawcock. The brave man who brought back a catch fish; enough to feed the hungry villagers of Mousehole during a harsh and stormy winter. On 23rd December every year a festival is held in the village in his memory. A feature of the Tom Bawcock Eve festival is the parade where the villagers carry a Star Gazey Pie through Mousehole.
