Calls For Investment In Ireland's Gaeltacht to Bolster the Celtic Tongue

From Galway Bay FM News and the Connacht Tribune:

Galway’s Oireachtas members are being urged to lobby for more investment in the Irish language and Gaeltacht areas. Conradh na Gaelige is calling on TDs (members of the Lower House of the Irish Parliament) and Senators to reverse what it describes as detrimental cuts to the Irish language sector.

It follows the closure of Gaeilge Locha Riach last month due to the termination of funding from Foras na Gaelige. Nationally, the budget for the Irish language and Gaeltacht authorities has been slashed from 45 million to just 22 million euro over the past 8 years.

Conradh na Gaelige is launching a new campaign ahead of next week’s budget, in a bid to secure better financial support for Ireland’s Gaeltacht areas. General Secretary Julian de Spáinn told Galway Bay Fm news that greater funding for the Irish language would mean significant job creation.

The Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaelige) is the main voluntary community organisation that promotes the Irish language in Ireland and abroad, The Gaelic League’s main aim is to reinstate the Irish language as the common tongue of Ireland.  Since its founding in 1893, members have been actively promoting Irish in every aspect of life in Ireland, from legal and educational affairs to the development of media and services through Irish.  Members of the Gaelic League are in the forefront of campaigns to strengthen the rights of the Irish speaking community.
