Helford - Heylfordh

Helford (Heylfordh) is a village on the south bank of the Helford River west from Mawgan about five miles southwest of Falmouth. Within the village is a shop and pub. There is a foot ferry that runs in the summer months to Helford Passage which is a village situated on the north bank of the Helford River opposite Helford.

Our Visit

Visiting in March gave us the opportunity to see the daffodils that are abundant in the hedgerows of Cornwall at this time of year in full bloom. Helford is in a very picturesque setting with a cluster of attractive thatched buildings. Helford was once an important trading port, importing tobacco, rum and other goods from the continent. The Helford River on which the village sits was also known as a haunt for pirates in the times of the Napoleonic Wars. Author Daphne du Maurier captures the mood of the period in her novel ‘Frenchman’s Creek’. A visit to Helford is highly recommended.
