Tesco Stores in Cornwall use Cornish language

TESCO USE OF CORNISH LANGUAGE

The Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League reports that Tesco in Cornwall are now using Kernewek – the Cornish language and also flying Cornwall National Flag. This latest progress for the language comes on the back of an earlier decision by Police to introduce bi-lingual signage at Truro Police station.

“A member of the Kernow Branch Celtic League in Cornwall was delighted to have received a communication from Tesco Stores PLC making use of Kernewek - the Cornish language - as well as the popular and now widely recognised flag of St. Piran being included.

A bilingual greeting 'Hello from Tesco' then in Kernewek (Cornish), 'Dydh da dhyworth Tesco emblazoned the front page and was accompanied by the Cornish flag.

This news soon spread across social media and was extremely well received.

It is becoming increasingly common to see large retailers in Cornwall make use of the Cornish language and the Branch has previously written to all major stores with news of the 2002 official recognition of the language and the 2014 official recognition of the Cornish as a distinct Celtic people. The new Asda Stores in Hayle has made extensive use of the Cornish language and industrial heritage interpretation displays at its entrance way and J.D. Wetherspoons Pubs in Cornwall have bilingual signage and local names.

Further, the Branch was also pleased to write to the Chief Constable to thank him for the placing of dual language signage at Truro Police Station in Cornwall as well as at the police facility at 'Heartlands' in Pool.

A letter has been sent from the Branch to Tesco Stores to thank them for their actions:

One of our members was delighted to receive a communication from Tesco Stores where the Cornish language and flag was used.

You will be aware that the Cornish language was officially recognised by the Government in 2002 and the Cornish people officially recognised as a National Minority and incorporated into the European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities in 2014.

A copy of the communication is attached as a JPG and shows, 'Hello from Tesco' then in Kernewek (Cornish), 'Dydh da dhyworth Tesco.' The National Flag of Cornwall, the Banner St. Piran which its much loved black background and white cross has thoughtfully been included.

Our organisation is delighted to note Tesco Stores inclusive approach and acceptance of our language and we shall be commending this in letters to the press as well as via our popular social media sites.

We write to thank Tesco Stores very much indeed for this forward looking action and ask that the relevant people in your organisation be thanked accordingly. Tescos are very much ahead of the game here and this will make you extremely popular in Cornwall !
