WHAT IS CORNISH CULTURE?

 I WAS once asked to define Cornish culture and the only realistic answer I could give was this:  “Read the three-part work Cornwall and Its People, written by A.K.Hamilton Jenkin between 1932 and 1934.  Read every word and, once you’ve got through its 487 pages, you will have at least scratched the surface and given yourself a general idea of what it is.

You may well be aware that during this last general election, something remarkable happened in Cornwall. Scores if not hundreds of extra people have now registered to vote, many of them younger people.

The below letter has been sent to Cornwall Council. Oversight of Heritage matters in Cornwall has been devolved by the Westminster Government to Cornwall Council and a stakeholding body was suggested from the outset of that announcement.

Re: Heritage Kernow

I was one of the stakeholders who attended the Heritage Kernow meeting last autumn. I was to have attended its follow-up a few months ago, but that was postponed for an unspecified reason, and we've all been waiting to hear of the rearranged date ever since. We still haven't been advised of this.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST

Last year, during November, we submitted a Freedom of Information Request as follows to the Department for Communities & Local Government (DCLG) following the announcement that Westminster had ceased its funding for the Cornish language:

ADVOCACY

Following meetings between the police and Matt and Mike, Devon & Cornwall Police Headquarters are currently considering recommending KMTU as officially recognised advocates to deal with racist incidents against the Cornish National Minority.  We have just received an email confirming this from the Police Diversity & Victim Care Unit.

'PRAG NA?': The new project that aims to support and grow social opportunities for Cornish speaking.

My name is Brian Rogers and I've just started as Project Lead for this one-year Cornwall Council funded project managed and led by An Rosweyth, the network of Cornish language organisations, and wanted to ask for your help in spreading the word, so please feel free to share this with your friends!

'PRAG NA?', or 'Why not?', has two main aims, both of which are about getting more people engaged with Kernewek and speaking it.

The Conservatives won 46 out of the 122 seats, with the Liberal Democrats taking 37 seats, followed by 30 Independent councillors. Labour have five seats and Mebyon Kernow four.

The unitary authority's remaining 123rd seat, Bodmin St Petroc, will be contested at a later date.

Negotiations will now have to occur to form the Unitary administration.

Sincere congratulations to all those members of KMTU who stood for election and who were successful or otherwise at Cornwall and Town and Parish levels.

It has to be a big pat on the back for the valiant journalists from the West Briton (and sister newspapers) to say thank you for attempting to remind the blow in Prime Minister MAY that we do just still live in a democracy, well in Cornwall at least!
