Archaeologists Uncover Bronze Age Settlement On Scottish Islands Of Orkney

Shifting sand dunes have uncovered a major new Bronze Age settlement in Orkney. Archaeologists from the University of the Highlands and Islands made the discovery on Sanday, a small island to the north of the Orkney mainland. Stone walls belonging to 14 houses have been found, which experts now believe could be one of the largest Bronze Age settlements ever found in Scotland. However, the 4000-year-old complex is threatened by coastal erosion and work is underway to find out as much as possible before it is destroyed.

Parida Report Reinforces Need For Resilience In Nuclear Sea Transports

You may have forgotten the MV Parida (pictured below) we haven’t!

It was a Danish registered ro-ro cargo vessel on passage from Scrabster in Scotland to Antwerp, Belgium carrying nuclear waste when it caught fire in October 2014.

We raised the accident at the time with UK and Danish authorities. We also drew the attention of the International Atomic Energy Agency to the incident.

Now the nuclear material on board was ‘low grade’ but nonetheless it was nuclear material.

The weather must have been a lot kinder to drains in the 1940s when they started casting around to find a location to site a nuclear experimental facility which would grow and grow (like topsy) until it turned into the monster site we know as Sellafield.

Isle of Man - Jersey Goes Down The Toilet, So Will We, But Ours Will Be Taxed

The fact that a UK ‘National’ newspaper woke up to the fact that the Crown Dependencies exist was exercising the media today.

Jersey it seems is going down the toilet fast and there is a far chance the Isle of Man will follow. Of course people from the business community will be wheeled out to say that we have ‘strengths’ that Jersey does not have. Politicians will say we have been diversifying the economy for years etc.

Isle of Man: Calling all Manx Songwriters

If you're a local songwriter and fancy a new challenge, then why not have a go at writing an original song in Manx Gaelic for the annual Arrane son Mannin Competition?

With a chance to win £300 in prize money (sponsored by Culture Vannin), this is a great opportunity for a group to fly the Manx flag at the Pan Celtic Song Contest in Carlow, Ireland, next year as representatives of the Isle of Man.

Local performers have been consistently in the top three (including first place) of the competition in recent years, which is held as part of the Pan Celtic Festival.

Crowd Funding Appeal for New York Memorial to a Manxman is supported by President of Tynwald

 

News From The Celtic League

A 4-week £4,000 crowd-funding initiative is being led by author Bob Stimpson and the US and Manx descendants of William Kennish. Running until 28th December, raising funds to place a memorial in New York made from Manx Granite, the initiative has been endorsed by Hon Clare Christian MLC, President of Tynwald, the Isle of Man government.
