Cronk Karran

Cronk Karran

Cronk Karran is a Neolithical stone circle which is either a burial circle or hut circle. In the far south of the Island near the village of Cregneash.

It is important to take care when visiting this site. It is in an area known as The Chasms. Deep fissures in the heather and grass covered rock near the site can be dangerous. It is important to stick to the well worn paths made by other visitors. I went there on a clear sunny February day. The circle is clearly visible from the coastal footpath above and you can follow tracks down to the circle. The views are stunning. I decided to follow the coastal path from Port St Mary. After stopping at the circle I carried on along the coastal path eventually reaching the cafe at the Sound. There are excellent views across to the Calf of Man from the cafe. An excellent site to visit with beautiful cliff views.

Getting there

  • By car - Cregneash on either the A31 from Port St Mary or on Ballnahowe Road from Port Erin. From Cregneash the road to the Chasms and coast. A short walk along the coast on Spanish head leads to the site.
  • By bus - The no. 1 Bus route from Douglas, Castletown, Port Erin or Port St Mary to Cregneash. From Cregneash about half a mile walk to the Chasms and the coast.
  • By rail - Take the Steam Railway to Port St Mary. Then walk into Port St Mary and on to Cregneash or take the bus route no. 1.
