The UK Has Been Poisoning Our Children For Years And The Manx Government Does Nothing!

NEWS FROM THE CELTIC LEAGUE

Some one forwarded a link to the ‘Ten most Radioactive Places on Earth’ and of course right up there on the list of shame is Seallafield. Here’s a quote from the site:

http://climateviewer.com/…/10-most-radioactive-places-on…/5/

“Located on the west coast of England, Sellafield was originally a plutonium production facility for nuclear bombs, but then moved into commercial territory. Since the start of its operation, hundreds of accidents have occurred at the plant, and around two thirds of the buildings themselves are now classified as nuclear waste. The plant releases some 8 million liters of contaminated waste into the sea on a daily basis, making the Irish Sea the most radioactive sea in the world. England is known for its green fields and rolling landscapes, but nestled in the heart of this industrialized nation is a toxic, accident-prone facility, spewing dangerous waste into the oceans of the world.”

It reminded us that over a decade ago (November 2002) we wrote to UNICEF saying:

“Our organisation recognises the important role undertaken by UNICEF on behalf of the worlds children to promote their well-being and health and monitor the implications of any threats posed.

With this in mind your organisation will be aware of concerns voiced periodically over the past decade about the impact on child health of the nuclear re-processing and energy programme undertaken in Western Europe.

UNICEF should also be aware about concerns contained in the 1997 report by the United Kingdom Department of Health (Entitled – Variations in the Concentration of Plutonium, Strontium-90, and Total Alpha-emitters in Human Teeth Collected within the British Isles) which found that there was a correlation between proximity to the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant and the concentration of plutonium in children's
teeth).

The organisation should also have knowledge of the report by Dr. Chris Busby (& others) based at Aberystwyth University into incidence of child leukaemia (Entitled - Proximity to the Irish sea and Leukaemia incidence at ages 0-4 in Wales from 1974-1987) this seems to indicate a correlation of childhood leukaemia and discharges of radioactive waste materials to the Marine Environment.

The last report is one of a number which address this issue. Dr. Busby has since produced additional research papers. I attach a recent paper presented at Bergen in 2001. Relevant sections are highlighted. In addition I understand parallel research by a German team has reached similar conclusions about the nuclear waste discharges from Cap de la Hag and the incidence of child leukaemia.

Can I ask, bearing in mind the work undertaken by UNICEF in other areas to identify threats to child health from both toxic chemicals and exposure to radiation, if any work has been carried out by your organisation with both the United Kingdom and French government and with NGOs to ascertain if the two countries nuclear programmes and particularly their waste reprocessing pose a risk to child health.

As you will see not only did we cite Dr Chris Busby’s work in Wales but also parallel work by a German team of Scientists who had looked at the discharges from the French facility at Cap de la Hague.”

Unfortunately UNICEF would not pursue it at the time, because we were not an accredited NGO and indeed they prefer issues like this to be raised by National governments. What did the Manx government do? Nothing in fact although periodically it blears about its opposition to Sellafield it does absolutely nothing to keep the issue in stark focus.

The Irish Sea is still the most polluted in the world and it does impact health, especially the health of children! WAKE UP COMIN!
