Thousands March in Nantes for the Reunification of Brittany

An estimated fifteen thousand people demonstrated on the streets of Nantes yesterday calling for the reunification of Nantes and the Loire Atlantique with the rest of Brittany. It comes after other such protests across Brittany calling for the Loire Atlantique to be returned to its rightful place within the ancient national boundaries of the nation of Brittany. The participants braved the rainy conditions and came from all sections of Breton society. This peaceful demonstration, organised only within a matter of weeks, shows the strength of feeling that the people of Brittany have in regard to the continued partition of their country by the French state. The partition was undertaken against the wishes of the Breton people by the Vichy regime in 1941.

Pressure continues to mount on the administration of François Hollande to listen to the will of the Breton people. It comes at a time when regional reform is being undertaken in France. This is an ideal opportunity to correct the historic act of vandalism, which the partition of Brittany represents. Reunification also offers hope for economic regeneration in Brittany which has been sadly neglected by successive French governments.
