Spanish Opposition To Scottish EU Moves 'Predictably Negative'

News from Mannin Branch of the Celtic League:

The International Relations Officer of Mec Vannin, Allen Moore, has slammed the Spanish reaction to Nicola Sturgeons attempt to maintain Scottish membership of the EU as ‘predictably negative’.

It seems the Spanish Government are prepared to sacrifice any ability to rescue some element of the UK EU exit for the sake of their own narrow self interest.

Spain has two aspiring independent countries within its borders Catalonia and the Basque country. The Spanish government are fearful that both will break the chains that bind them to Spain.

Spain despite purporting to be a modern democracy clings to a colonialist mentality which is often confusing and contradictory. For example it rails against the British possession of Gibraltar despite the fact Gibraltarians want none of Spain and have voted overwhelmingly to have no connection to it. At the same time it clings on to enclaves in North Africa.

The MV release by Mr Moore who has travelled extensively in both the Catalan and Basque areas is set out below:

“How predictably negative!

Nicola Sturgeon has been to Brussels, meeting a number of officials, including Jean-Claude Juncker (European Commission President) and Martin Schulz (European Parliament President). In Scotland earlier in the week she set up an expert panel on the EU. One of the members of this panel, David Martin, MEP for the Scottish Lothians constituency, said that it was a very positive move of Nicola Sturgeon to go to Brussels to “test the water”. There would be no decisions today, but this is surely the first step on a long road. Note, of course, that David Martin is a Labour MEP, not Scottish National Party. Perhaps Scotland also shows the way for cross party unity when the two main UK unionist parties are tearing themselves apart in Westminster.

The results of the EU Referendum in the UK weren't predictable, but reactions by some country leaders to the idea of Scotland negotiating direct with the EU certainly were. The (Acting) Prime Minister of one EU country, Spain, said after a Summit of EU leaders that Spain opposed negotiations by anyone other than the government of the UK. Mariano Rajoy, who is the leader of the right wing Partido Popular (the so-called “People's Party”), is Acting Prime Minister because his party has failed to form a government or lead a coalition after two General Elections, which were in December 2015 and earlier this month. Of course, Spain is faced by calls for independence by two countries within its borders, Catalunya (Catalonia) and Euskadi (Basque Country). French President Francois Hollande agreed with Rajoy's opposition. The French State also includes a number of minorities within its borders, including our fellow Celts in Breizh (Brittany). Anyway, despite these obstructions and despite events in the last week, we look forward to the day that Scottish independence will be declared.

Allen Moore,
Mec Vannin International Officer”
