Objections mount to sycophantic name change of bridge to Wales

The UK Government has been condemned after it announced plans to rename the second Severn Crossing. Severn Crossing is a term used to refer to the two motorway crossings over the River Severn estuary between England and Wales. The name decided on without any consultation with the Welsh people is the Prince of Wales Bridge. It has been met with fierce opposition in Wales with petitions and online campaigns garnering huge support.

With a nauseating display of sycophancy, UK government Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns declared this week: “I’m delighted to announce that – with the agreement of the Prime Minister and Her Majesty the Queen – the Second Severn Crossing will be renamed the Prince of Wales Bridge. The announcement is a fitting tribute to His Royal Highness in a year that sees him mark 60 years as the Prince of Wales and decades of continued service to our nation. Renaming one of our most iconic landmarks in Wales is a fitting way to formally recognise his commitment and dedication to Wales and the UK as the Prince of Wales.”

This revolting example of forelock-tugging towards the English royal family has gone down like a lead balloon in Wales. If the bridge is to be renamed then it should represent something of particular cultural significance to Wales and in consultation with the people of Wales. As it stands this decision to name it Prince of Wales Bridge is arbitrary, extremely unpopular and insulting.
