Much public anger at Cornwall Council decision to subsidise Duke Charles

The news that Prince Charles' Duchy of Cornwall will get a £8.7million grant from Cornwall Council along with a loan of £7.1m to fund a road to its housing development in Newquay has provoked anger and outrage in Cornwall.

The Council's Cabinet has agreed to provide the £8.7m which will plug a funding gap for the Newquay Strategic Route (NSR) which will serve the Duchy of Cornwall's Nansledan development. The heir to the throne visited the "urban extension" development in March.

However, behind the smiles in official photographs, public anger has been palpable and is aimed at the Westminster Government, Duke Charles and now Cornwall Council.

Since the news became public knowledge, we have been watching not only the newspaper websites which allow public postings, but also social media and we reproduce below 'warts and all' the unedited comments made by people on just one public website.

It really does now appear that there is a widening gap between 'them' and 'us' as we see our green and pleasant land being destroyed by uncaring politicians at all levels hand in hand with the Duke and other property developers.

The 'Cornwall Live' website has seen more postings beneath this news article than has been witnessed in many a long while. This website is the on line presence of the West Briton, Cornishman and Cornish Guardian.

Below are just some of the comments from that site.

Similar sentiments are expressed many hundreds of times over on the many Facebook accounts we administer and even more which we don't.

There was anger at the enormously overpaid chief officers' 'gallyvant' to Cannes for what has widely been perceived as 'sex and sangria' paid for by Cornish taxpayers well hidden under the cover of some sort of dubious conference. That anger has now been further fueled by this latest show of sycophancy at taxpayers' expense.

For sure and as suggested, the Westminster government, Royal family and now Cornwall Council are not much endearing themelves with Cornish taxpayers. In terms of democracy and reading many of the countless comments on social media which are far less inhibited than the ones reproduced below, this will reflect in many voters merely walking away from the democratic process and not bothering to vote and we all understand the dangers of that outcome. Beware disempowerment in these increasingly authoritarian times.

I am b****y angry to read this! I work. My other half works. The kids are at school. We are not on welfare and we don't scrounge or borrow. Yet this royal wing nut is suckered up too by the sychophants at Cornwall Council. We damned well struggle to pay our council tax which has gone up again this year. Is no body listening? I am beginning to detest the Council as much as I detest the government.

Cornishmen, you should visit Poundbury Village on the edge of Dorchester to see what happens when this sort of thing goes on. Looks like Princetown Prison!

Surely the profit from the house sales should go towards this?

I cannot find words which can be written here to express how disgusted I am with this news. Like others below, our council tax bill is the largest monthly payment we have and yes, we are damned well struggling to find the spare cash to pay it. The so called royal family, the government and the council should be bloody well ashamed of themselves for the way we are being treted and milked for what little cash we have spare. What can we do about it? Nothing but that doesn't mean I don't resent the whle lot of them any less for this.

Simple answer to this, is a BIG NO. Prince Charles wants a new road let him pay for it. He gets enough money out of the West Country.

How dare the Council even consider this sum. Houses suddenly land locked ! Smack of incompetence. About time the shadow of a CEO and the Council Leader both pulled their heads out of their respective buckets of sand , and started asking serious leadership questions. We're like a rudderless ship.....

Will the Councillors debate this funding and vote on it . Let Prince Charles use his own money.  Truro needs a new relief road for the A390. The Duchy of Cornwall are stinking with money they make out of Cornwall but put nothing back in for good causes, all onlyreturns into their greedy coffers.

Tax payers always have to pay for everything.

Royalty never pays anything.

Save money by getting rid of the Royals.

Cornwall Council are wonderful at spending our money on projects few of us support. Prince Charles professes to be a staunch environmentalist but has already built hundreds of homes on the green fields of Newquay with many more to come. The Duchy and PC have endless amounts of cash available and must have made tens of millions from the sale of Nansleden properties already. CC should not even be considering this proposal, it should be paid for by the Duchy to whom £8.5m is small change.

Duchy is land stolen from the people. Just like the Russian Oligarchs. They really have got a cheek asking the public to fund this even if they are paying it back. We are mugs to allow this to continue. Sychophantic Councillors will be gushingly supportive!

Charles Windsor and the many so-called royals are just ordinary people and equal to everyone. They do not own or deserve any land in the British Isles. The people of Britain own the land, those subjects constantly battered with propaganda conditioning, must wake up and realise this fact. You are all equal and no-one, royals included, should be treated as a god. We do not live in the age of subservient peasants, although the establishment would want you to believe otherwise. Oliver Cromwell had it right, then the grovelling greedy's brought their royal gods back for their own selfish greed. Daily conditioning, especially so on the BBC, has continued ever since. Who needs enemies when you've got royalty and religion dictating the rules!
