Lack of Welsh language service provided by Banks under investigation

As reported in Welsh newspaper the Daily Post:

'Bank customers are being asked to send in their complaints about a lack of Welsh services to the Language Commissioner.

Meri Huws said today that she will conduct a statutory review of Welsh language services offered by banks in Wales.

Under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011, she has the power to do anything she thinks appropriate to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language.

Ms Huws said: “Over the past weeks and months I have seen a significant increase in complaints about Welsh language services offered by banks. I have also received evidence from voluntary organisations identifying specific concerns about the sector.

“It is therefore clear that this is a matter of concern to members of the public across Wales. By carrying out a statutory review, I will consider carefully the evidence that has already been received.

“I also invite other organisations and individuals to contact me and share their experiences of using the Welsh language when dealing with banks.

“As part of the review I will also gather evidence from the banks and experts in the banking sector.”

After gathering and interpreting the evidence, she will draw conclusions and prepare recommendations to improve the customer’s experience of dealing with banks through the medium of Welsh in Wales.

Complainants should send their evidence by January 30, 2015 by emailing post@welshlanguagecommissioner.org, by letter to the Welsh Language Commissioner, Market Chambers 5-7 St Mary Street, Cardiff, CF10 1AT or by telephoning 0845 6033221.'
