Gaelic Language Broadcasting in Scotland - Success To Success

As reported on the website "forArgyll.com", the BBC Alba Gaelic Broadcasting Channel have announced an increase in funding of 1 million pounds for the coming year.  The channel offers a wide selection of Gaelic language programming and has been widely hailed as a force in the preservation and renewed growth of Scottish Gaelic. The announcement also highlighted statistics showing an increase in viewership for its Gaelic Language programming.  

BBC Alba is a Scottish Gaelic language television channel jointly owned in a unique partnership between the BBC and MG Alba.  MG Alba is funded by the Scottish government and gives the following mission statement from their web page: " Our promise is to inspire and encourage (language growth) through media and Gaelic." 

Donald Campbell, BBC Alba Chief Executive, made the following statement on the surge in viewership in connection with the announcement on increased funding: "2012 - 2013 was the best ever year for audiences for BBC Alba.  Weekly reach in Scotland grew from 10.6% (436,000 viewers) to 15.6% (637,000). Interest in Gaelic-speaking  communities also grew and the average of 79% in Quarter 4 (viewership in Gaelic speaking areas) was the highest recorded since the launch of the channel in 2008."
