Fall in Welsh speakers is "Crisis"

In the news recently were the results of the 2011 Welsh census, which indicate an unexpected drop in the number of Welsh speakers.  It is reported that the 2001 census registerd 20.5% as Welsh Speaking whereas the 2011 census reported a drop to 19 %. 

This has set off alarm bells amongst Welsh Language activists.  For example, the Chair of the Welsh Language Society Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg, Robin Farrar, was quoted widely as characterising the Welsh Language as "In Crisis".  Farrar continued, "Over the past 10 years they (The Welsh Government) have failed to support the Welsh Language".
