Concerns For Scottish Officer Cadet Seamen

News from Celtic League:

There are concerns for the well being of several Scottish Merchant navy officer cadets stranded at sea off Singapore after the Shipping firm they had a placement with went into receivership.

The four cadets from Clyde Marine Training were on a placement with South Korea’s Hanjin Shipping line as part of their City of Glasgow College course when the company ran into financial difficulities.

Reports state Hanjin has been granted orders to protect its ships from seizure but dozens are understood to be anchored off ports while the company tries to secure the funds to unload cargo.

Ruairidh Hanna, from Dingwall, and three other cadets are amongst those stuck on board the Hanjin Louisiana ship which is at present anchored east of Singapore.

There are calls for the UK Foreign Office to intervene although given that there are implications not just for the four young people but for crews on Hanjin vessels stranded world wide it could be an issue the IMO – ILO and International Transport Federation should address.
