Celtic Congress 2019 held in Cornwall

Information received from the Celtic Congress which is in Cornwall

The International Celtic Congress is taking place at the Hotel Bristol in Newquay from Thursday 25th until Tuesday 30th April.

The theme of the Conference is Recording Our Past to Inform Our Future.

The Congress takes place in each of the Celtic Countries in turn and so the Cornish branch host it every six years.

Each day starts with lessons in the Celtic language of the host country and this will take the form of singing in Cornish. Speakers on the theme will be coming from all six Celtic Countries – Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man, Scotland, Brittany and from here in Cornwall.

The Congress will include visits for the delegates to the new archive building in Redruth and the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, both visits fitting in well with the theme.

A Proclamation of the Cornish Gorsedh will take place on the Saturday when two new bards of honour, one from Brittany and one from Wales, will be initiated.

On the Sunday at 3.00pm an ecumenical church service will be held at St Michael’s church Newquay when it will be possible to hear a reading in each of the Celtic languages.

There will also be musicians and singers attending who will be entertaining each evening and at our International Concert on Monday evening 29th.

As well there will be a Ceilidh led by Bagas Crowd on the Sunday evening 28th. Both these events are open to the public, tickets cost £5 each.
