Anniversary of the Battle of Culloden

On this day in 1746: The Battle of Culloden took place. Prince Charles Edward Stuart, (31 December 1720 – 31 January 1788) The Young Pretender, affectionately known as Bonnie Prince Charlie was the grandson of James II of Scotland and had led the second Jacobite Uprising of 1745 to overthrow the British King George II. The Jacobite cause was supported by many Highland clans. Prince Charlie and his forces were defeated at the Battle of Culloden (Scottish Gaelic: Blàr Chùil Lodair). The aftermath of the Battle of Culloden was extremely brutal with British forces roaming the battlefield stabbing any of the defeated Scottish soldiers who were still alive. The hated Duke of Cumberland, who was the third and youngest son of George II of Great Britain is noted for his brutality. After the Battle of Culloden he ordered his troops to show no quarter against any remaining Jacobite supporters killing the defeated soldiers they found. Prince Charlie was able to escape and was famously helped by Flora MacDonald
