Welsh icon Shirley Bassey reaches new heights as Snowdon Mountain Railway carriage named in her honour

Welsh singer Shirley Bassey has today had a carriage of the historic Snowdon Mountain Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd yr Wyddfa) named in her honour. The honour recognises Dame Shirley as an international ambassador for Wales and for her musical career. Over the years she has won a number of awards including a UNESCO Artist for Peace Award, a Welsh Legend Award and the Légion d'Honneur. She was the first Welsh singer to have a number one single and also the the only artist to record three James Bond theme songs: Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker. Shirley Veronica Bassey was born in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff, Wales and began her 65 year singing career in the mid-1950s.

Dame Shirley today rode on the railway and unveiled the Snowdon Mountain Railway carriage named in her honour in a ceremony at Llanberis Station. She said:

 "I'm so grateful to Snowdon Mountain Railway for this unique honour," 

"It's been a privilege to entertain audiences around the world and help put Wales on an international stage." 

"I'm proud of my Welsh roots and this honour keeps me forever connected to Wales and one of its most iconic locations."
