Manx Radio - Time to end the last 'Winter Work Scheme'

Hardly has Nicola Guffogg and her Treasury chums socked me with another extortionate tax demand this year than the latest report from ‘Popeye’ (aka Alex Allinson MHK) and Co suggests that Alf Cannan should take over Manx Radio or at least pour more money into it. This will be grist to the mill for Alf and his trusty sidekicks like Nicola and Sheila at the Treasury bunker. Meanwhile the other political members like Bill Henderson MLC will nod their heads like those santa figures you saw in toy shops years ago.

The script so far is that Manx Radio management have been making such a hash of running the show we should all bail it out AGAIN!

Back in the 1960s they ran ‘winter work schemes’ to soak up unemployment. Manx Radio is the last manifestation of winter work schemes except theirs lasts for twelve months (repetitively).

I’m reminded on the scene from the classic movie TALK RADIO which says:

“Marvellous technology is at our disposal instead of reaching up to new heights we’re gonna see how far down we can go how deep into the muck we can immerse ourselves”

The one thing about the Allinson Manx Radio report that I find positive is that it casts Alf Cannan MHK in a new light. I had seen Alf as the arch conservative but in fact he’s more of a Clement Attlee figure determined to nationalise everything. He’s already of to a great start with the Steam Packet.

You get the impression that the Allinson report was written in collaboration with Charles Dodgson but then you remember ‘Lewis Carroll’ is dead. It seems we were only left with the ‘Mad March Hare’ to write the report.

Either way it seems that there is no device that Allinson will not use to suck up to Alf (who he thinks is going to be the next Chief Minister) and that includes you and I paying more for that useless pile on Douglas Head.

If the government really want to get a ‘golden share’ in any area of Island life it’s not Manx Radio it should be Manx Gas - preferably before the winter.

As for Manx Radio just shut the door no bugger listens to it anyway every public place you visit has Energy or radio stations from further afield.

It’s time to end the last ‘winter work scheme’ they were never much use - like Manx Radio!
