Irish Police and State institutions settle with honest policeman who tried to expose corruption

News from the Celtic League:

This article below from the Celtic League reports on the recent settlement with former Garda Sergeant Maurice McCabe. He had tried to expose Garda malpractice. This resulted in a discraceful attempt to undermine him by an orchestrated smear campaign, including false accusations of child abuse. An attempt not only to undermine Sergeant McCabe, but to deter anyone else who wanted to expose corruption within the Irish police force and indeed other state bodies. In the end they failed with Sergeant McCabe, but will others be prepared to undergo the immense pressures that were placed on him. It takes a brave person to stand up to these pressures. It also points out the importance of fully protecting those "whistle blowers" who expose malpractice and corruption, particularly when facing the full force of the state:

"IRELAND: STATE SETTLES WITH HONEST COPPER WHO DID HIS DUTY!"

"The Irish Police and State institutions have settled a number of damages cases with former Garda Sergeant Maurice McCabe. McCabe’s one failing to use a quote from the hit series ‘Line of Duty’ was that he was not ‘a bent copper’ in a system that was corrupt.

McCabe tried to blow the whistle on Garda malpractice and was immediately subjected to a vile backlash both from the Garda Siochana and other State institutions. Gross allegations were made in a smear campaign about his private and family life which were totally without foundation. Indeed sticking with the ‘Line of Duty’ analogy the treatment of McCabe makes the average episode of that drama seem like an Enid Blyton tale.

The rot in the Garda corruption case went right to the heart not just of the police but the State with a former Justice Minister forced to resign. It shows that despite the pretensions of separation between police, judiciary and politicians there can in fact be an inherent and incestuous relationship.

McCabe served as a Garda sergeant in the comparatively small town of Bailieborough in Co Cavan (population less than 3000) but he was able to highlight abuses which make one wonder what police corruption and excess was occurring elsewhere in the large cities of Ireland like Dublin.

He has won undisclosed damages as outlined in this report from RTE:

Meanwhile lessons are supposed to have been learned but in reality have they and how many other police officers in that jurisdiction or others would be prepared to put their neck on the line in the way McCabe did?
