Kenfig Castle - Castell Cynffig

Castell Cynffig - Kenfig Castle

Castell Cynffig (Castle Kenfig). Little is left of the original twelfth century Norman site, but later rebuilding has left the remains of a stone keep, square tower and thick walls. It is located about five miles north west of Porthcawl, on a small road southwest off the B4283 and in the northeast corner of Kenfig Nature Reserve. The castle was built by Robert Earl of Gloucester. It was sacked by the Welsh of several occasions in the twelfth and thirteenth century and again in the fourteenth.

Our Visit

This site is surrounded by by sand dunes and fell into disuse by the late fifteenth century when the sands engulfed it. A lady walking her dogs pointed the site out to me and said that visiting at this time of year (it was just before Christmas) was good as in the summer months the site can be covered in bracken. She informed me that there was a settlement surrounding the castle which also fell into dis-use at the time the castle was abandoned. A church attached to the settlement was dismantled and then rebuilt elsewhere. To find the site stay southwest of the B4283 and the M4. Walk into the Nature reserve and follow the path close to the motorway.
