Áras an Uachtaráin

This is the official residence of the President of Ireland and is in Pheonix Park on the northside of Dublin. Built in the late eighteenth century it was the summer residence of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the former dark days of British rule. It was also the site of the murders in 1882 of the British Chief Secretary for Ireland and his Under-secretary by two members of the 'Irish National Invicibles' in the grounds of the house.

The house became the official residence of the President of Ireland in 1938 and the Irish name 'Áras an Uachtaráin' translates into English as 'House of the President'.
