Douglas/Doolish, the capital of the Isle of Man, comprises a mixture of holiday resort, financial centre and working harbour. The Manx Museum is highly recommended for discovering the history and culture of the Island. It will give you a flavour of what the Island has to offer and the fascinating sites that await you along the Manx-Celtic trails.
Following your visit to the Museum, we'd suggest a leisurely stroll through Douglas. In Manx Gaelic "traa dy liooar" (time enough) encourages this process of adjusting to a more relaxed pace.
There are particularly interesting transport links within and starting from Douglas. The world's oldest horse drawn trams travel the length of the promenade. The Isle of Man Steam Railway founded in 1873, operates throughout the summer and runs from Douglas to Port Erin in the South, passing through and stopping at villages and towns on the way. Douglas is also where you can go aboard the Manx Electric Railway to Laxey and Ramsey. This tram service also provides an excellent means to access some of the most beautiful Glens on the Isle of Man.
Car hire is widely available and, if you only have a few days, a car will help you get to the sites on the trails much more quickly and enable you to see much more. However, there is also a wide ranging bus service, so a car is not obligatory if you have more time or are only interested in a limited number of sites.
There is an abundance of well established walking and cycling routes on the Island, many originating or passing through Douglas.
As you would expect with being the capital and largest city, Douglas has the widest range of accommodation available on the Isle of Man.
We believe in supporting local businesses and have selected two partners that offer an excellent choice of local accommodation available at the best prices:
If you are visiting from the UK then you will be partially covered by the Isle of Man's reciprocal health agreement with the UK; however, it is important to know that the cost of repatriation is not included. So if you would like coverage for this, or are a resident of any other nation (including USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or any other EU nations) then you will need to obtain travel insurance.
Whilst there are a lot of options on the market, our recommendation is Atlas Travel Insurance provided by HCC Medical Insurance Services. This travel insurance is available to residents of any nation, offers exceptional coverage and price to match. Relevant for British residents, it covers emergency medical evacuation, providing piece of mind just in case.
