Welsh Language Usage in Digital Media Promoted

The Welsh Government have launched a new programme to encourage the development of Welsh language software applications.  This initiative is providing grants to promote the use of the language in business. The intent of this programmee is to support the use of Welsh in the rapidly expanding area of digital online services.

Leighton Andrews, Minister for Education and Skills, stated: "To ensure that the Welsh language thrives in the twenty-first century and that Welsh speakers are fully able to participate as digital citizens, we must make Welsh language technology and digital media readily available.  We cannot allow the Welsh language to be left behind by the latest technologies, and should use these digital resources as a way of demonstrating that the language is a relevant, modern and creative medium".

Minister Leighton , in announcing the programme of grants, continued: "I am encouraged to see that there is an active community of Welsh speakers who are working hard to develop more Welsh language digital content such as apps, games and digital versions of Papurau Bro (local community newspapers published in Welsh).

Applications for grants are being accepted on the web page linked below through July 26, 2013.
