Daily Express withdraw offensive anti-Cornish postings

News From 'Kernow Matters To Us'

Following a written, formal complaint made by 'Kernow Matters to Us' (KMTU) Team to the Editorial Team of the Daily Express in London, which concerned offensive and racist postings made by some members of public written beneath an article on the Cornish language, the offensive postings have been withdrawn in their entirety and the posters banned.

In making the complaint, KMTU informed the Daily Express that offensive remarks made about Cornish people would not be tolerated and that a zero tolerance policy had been adopted.

Such remarks were in breach of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities under which the Cornish had been recognised as a non English, National Minority and that failure to act would result in the matter being taken to the Independent Press Standards Organisation, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the police under hate crimes legislation.

In its short period of existence, KMTU already has a track record of acting positively in all cases of anti Cornish abuse be it in the newspapers, on their websites, face to face and elsewhere and acknowledges the assistance of the police in this respect.

'Kernow Matters to Us' is Cornwall's newest NGO. Formed during 2015 to proclaim and celebrate Cornish culture, history, language and music whilst speaking out unashamedly for the Cornish, our growing membership comprises Cornish people and people of Cornwall and supporters far and wide and are proud to be members of the Cornish National Minority.
