Breton Language to be taught at Harvard University

Breton the language of the Celtic nation of Brittany is to be taught at Harvard University in the United States.  This follows an agreement between the Department of Breton and Celtic Studies at Rennes University in Brittany and the Department of Celtic languages and literature at Harvard University. This is a welcome step for the Breton language and confirms its importance and relevance in the world today.

The Breton language is one of the living Celtic languages and is gaining in popularity and strength. This is despite many years of France’s repressive policies towards the Breton language. The French Government continues this campaign of discrimination against the Breton language by refusing to ratify the "The European Charter For Regional or Minority Languages".  In doing so they want to deprive Breton speakers of the rights and priviledges protected by the Charter. Celtic languages are also spoken in the six Celtic nations of Brittany, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Isle of Man.
